These sections are being added to the Handy Andy Privacy Policy as sections 13 to 18. They cover Find a Pro (homeowners who ask us to send a repair request to pros), Handy Andy Pros, and businesses we invite to join.
13. Find a Pro (homeowners)
What we collect when you request a pro
- Your request: description, answers to our questions, photos, video, Handy Andy's diagnosis and price estimate, urgency and timing.
- Where: ZIP code, city, and the street address you type in. We don't use your phone's GPS for Find a Pro.
- Optional home details you choose to add: home type, own or rent, year built, size, and similar.
- Contact details: name, phone number, email.
- Your choices, with the exact wording you saw and when: agreement to the Find a Pro Terms, your OK to send the request, text-message consent, requests for more pros, cancellations, and opt-outs.
- What happens next: which pro accepted, whether they reached you, whether you hired them, the price you paid (if you tell us), and your rating and review.
How we use it
- To send your request to pros who work in your area, and to decide which ones.
- To tell you about your request, and to follow up.
- To improve our diagnoses and matching, and to measure how well Find a Pro works.
- To keep Find a Pro safe, prevent fraud and misuse, and handle complaints about pros.
- To meet legal obligations and enforce our terms.
We don't use your request photos, videos or descriptions for advertising. We don't give the prices you report to pros, and we don't use them to set the price estimates pros see.
Who we share it with
- Pros, because you ask us to. When you tap Send to pros:
- We send your request (description, photos, video without sound, diagnosis, price estimate, timing, ZIP code) to up to 3 independent local pros at a time. We remove location data from photos and videos first. Your photos and videos may still show things that identify you or your home, like house numbers, mail or faces, so please leave those out.
- The first pro who accepts gets your name, phone, email and street address, so they can contact you about this request. We'll tell you who it is.
- Pros pay Handy Andy a fee when they accept.
- We ask you before sending your request to more pros.
- Pros are independent businesses. Our Pro Partner Agreement allows them to use your information only to respond to and do your job, bars them from selling it or using it for other marketing, and requires them to keep it secure and delete it when they no longer need it. Once a pro has your information, they're also responsible for how they handle it.
- Service providers who help us run Handy Andy, under contracts that limit their use of your data:
- OpenAI and Anthropic (analyzing your photos, video and description);
- Google Firebase and Google Cloud (hosting, database, sign-in, notifications);
- Twilio (text messages);
- Resend (email);
- Stripe (billing pros; homeowners aren't charged);
- Vercel (our website) and DigitalOcean (our servers).
- Advertising measurement: as described in Sections 8.1–8.2 (Meta, RevenueCat). Find a Pro request contents are never sent to Meta.
- Legal and safety: when the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety or property. For example, if a pro is reported for a safety problem.
- Business transfers: if our business is sold or merged, under this policy.
"Selling" personal information. Some privacy laws treat a disclosure a business is paid for as a "sale". We share your details with a pro only because you direct us to when you tap Send to pros. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act that isn't a sale (Civ. Code §1798.140(ad)(2)(A)). If that law or another one ever requires it, we'll give you a way to opt out of any sale or sharing.
14. Handy Andy Pros
What we collect
- Business details: name, contact person, phone, email, address, Trades, service area, website.
- License details: license number, class and status, and the results of our checks against state license records. Workers' compensation status.
- Identity checks: a code sent to the phone or email on your license record, and names matched against the license personnel list. We don't collect copies of government IDs.
- Insurance certificates and their expiry dates, and the results of our checks with your insurer or agent.
- A background check, only if you complete a separate authorization, and then only its outcome (clear / consider / not eligible). The report stays with the screening company.
- Billing: Stripe stores your card. We keep only the card brand, the last 4 digits, the card fingerprint (to apply the one-per-business free lead) and billing status.
- Your agreement acceptance: version, date and time, IP address and device.
- Activity: lead offers, response times, acceptances, credits, outcomes, ratings, complaints and messages.
How we use it: to verify eligibility, match you to requests, show your business name, license and ratings to homeowners, bill Lead Fees, handle credits and complaints, enforce the Pro Partner Agreement, and improve the service. Decisions to pause or remove a pro are always reviewed by a person.
Who we share it with:
- Homeowners: your business profile, license number and ratings, and your contact details when you accept their request.
- Service providers (listed in Section 13), plus our background-check provider if you use one.
- Legal and safety.
Your choices: see and update your profile on the pro website, ask for a copy or deletion (privacy@handyandy.app), and stop texts by replying STOP. We keep billing and agreement records as the law requires.
15. Business contact information we use to invite pros
Sources:
- public state license records (the California CSLB list: business name, address, phone, license class and status);
- a business's own website (its published contact email);
- a business owner who gives us their details;
- a homeowner who suggests a pro through "Add my own pro" (business name and business phone or website only).
Use: only to invite the business to join Handy Andy Pros, and to check its license status.
- We don't sell this information.
- We don't text businesses that haven't signed up.
- We call only the numbers businesses publish for their business, dial by hand, and keep our own do-not-call list: if you ask us not to call, we won't.
- We never use a homeowner's actual request to recruit a pro. Examples in our outreach are made up.
- If a homeowner suggested you, we contact you once, say that a customer suggested you, and don't add you to any other outreach unless you ask.
Your choices: reply "unsubscribe" to any email, tell us on a call, or email privacy@handyandy.app to stop all contact and have your information deleted. We keep a minimal record so we don't contact you again.
Retention: deleted 12 months after our last contact if you don't join.
16. How long we keep Find a Pro information
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Photos and videos for requests no pro accepted | 30 days after the request closes |
| Photos and videos for accepted requests | 12 months after the request closes, unless you delete them sooner |
| Request records (details, which pro, outcome) | 4 years after the request closes (for support, disputes and legal claims), then deleted or de-identified |
| Consent and opt-out records (what you agreed to and when) | 5 years, including after account deletion (a minimal record only), because we may need to show your choices were honored |
| Pro billing and agreement records | 7 years (tax and contract records) |
| Prospect records for pros who never joined | 12 months after last contact. Do-not-contact requests are kept permanently as a suppression entry. |
Deleting your account (Settings → Delete Account) deletes your requests, photos and videos, except records we must keep (above). It can't recall information a pro who accepted already received, but we'll ask that pro to delete it.
17. Security and data incidents
We use reasonable security for your information. That includes limiting access to request data to you and our servers, expiring links for pros, and removing photo location data. If a security breach affects your personal information in a way the law covers, we'll notify you without unreasonable delay, and within 30 days where California law requires it (Civ. Code §1798.82).
18. Text messages
- We text only people who ask us to: homeowners who check "Text me about this request" in the app, and pros who check "Text me new lead offers" at signup. Our Text message terms explain each program.
- We never sell, rent or share your mobile number, your text-message opt-in or your consent with anyone for their marketing or promotional purposes. Text-message opt-in data and consent aren't shared with any third party, other than the provider that delivers our texts for us (Twilio).
- Reply STOP to any text to stop all Handy Andy texts, or HELP for help. Message and data rates may apply.
- Separately, when you send a repair request to pros, the pro who accepts gets your phone number so they can contact you about that request (Section 13). That isn't part of our text programs, and pros may use it only for your request.
